The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008, enacted July 15, 2008, requires incentive payments to successful electronic prescribers for 2009 through 2013 (2.0 percent for 2009 and 2010; 1.0 percent for 2011 and 2012; 0.5 percent in 2013). This payment will be made in addition to incentive payments paid as part of the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) and other Medicare reimbursements. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) added e-prescribing as a quality measure this year. Bonus payments will be phased out after 5 years and physicians who have not adopted e-prescribing will generally be reimbursed at lower rates.
